Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive detained and charged with money laundering in Nigeria, has made a new request for bail on medical grounds during his court appearance on September 2, according to a family statement shared with CryptoSlate.
Mr Gambaryan’s legal team cited his deteriorating health in prison as the reason for their request. They said his condition had worsened to the point where they could not meet with him to properly prepare him for trial.
The legal team expressed deep concern about Gambaryan’s health problems, which include a herniated disc, bouts of pneumonia, malaria and tonsillitis.
While appearing in court on crutches, Mr. Gambaryan informed the judge that prison authorities had denied him a wheelchair. He also pleaded with the judge that he was not receiving adequate medical care in prison and was being denied his basic rights, including access to a lawyer and embassy officials.
The judge has now ordered that Gambaryan be allowed to use a wheelchair, with the case set to continue on September 4.
It is worth noting that the court had already rejected Gambaryan’s first request for bail in May.
Response from Nigerian authorities
Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted the allegations made by Gambaryan and his legal team, saying his health issues are “not as serious” as alleged.
The EFCC reportedly noted that Gambaryan had been suffering from a herniated disc for over a decade.
Gambaryan’s wife, Yuki Gambaryan, expressed deep concern over statements by Nigerian authorities downplaying her husband’s health problems.
She said:
“The truth is that the prison has been hiding his medical records for months, and even the partial records they finally released today indicate that Tigran needs surgery. They cannot continue to play with my husband’s life like this. This whole situation is inhumane and degrading, and I’ve had enough. There must be consequences for this disregard for the law and human rights.”
